Koiter Institute Delft (KID)
The Koiter Institute Delft is meant to strengthen the mono-disciplinary activity engineering mechanics. This is of utmost importance for many interdisciplinary research programs in which engineering mechanics plays a vital role. We mention:
At university level the research programs ‘Development of improved endoprotheses for the upper extremities (DIOC-9)’ and ‘Micromechanics for macroscopic lifetime optimization (DIOC-10)’;
At national level:
- Two Technological Top Institutes (TTI), namely the Netherlands • Institute for Metals Research (NIMR) and the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI),
- Research programs commissioned by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), or subsidiary organizations such as the Technology Foundation (STW) or Fundamenteel Onderzoek der Materie (FOM). An example of such a program is the PrioriteitsProgramma-Materialen, where members of the Koiter Institute Delft carry out the 5 million guilder project ‘A combined experimental/computational approach to cementitious materials’;
At European level, research programmes such as:
- Human Capital and Mobility (HCM), where members of the Koiter Institute Delft have been involved in the projects ‘Geomaterials’, ‘Mechanics of Composite Materials and Structures’ and ‘Structural Mechanics’,
- Brite-Euram, where there is involvement in the project ‘Safe Metal’,
- Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR), where participation exists in the project ‘Spatio-temporal instabilities in materials’.
